British Lit. Research Paper

Depression’s Catharsis in Charlotte Smith’s Poetry

At the time of writing this I was in a reflective place mentally. I was in love with Charlotte Smith’s work and found a lot of relief in it. This paper was my final paper for a British Literature class. We were asked to find emotion and imagery in a piece of literature that we studied in class. Because I was in this reflective state and engulfed with Smith’s poetic imagery for depression in the 1700’s. I was fascinated at how relatable and representatively accurate imagery written in the 1700’s was of modern depression. Smith’s poetry has provided many with cathartic relief from depression. That cathartic relief is what inspired this paper and what I decided was to be its focus.
